The following free workshops are open to CA License-Exempt Childcare Providers (also known as Family, Friend & Neighbor Providers). Brought to you by your union (Childcare Providers United).

“Introduction to Loving Guidance & Conscious Discipline” - Saturday, September 11th @ 11am-1pm

Conscious Discipline is an adult-first discipline and emotional management program that helps adults be who they want the children in their care to become. In this two hour workshop, you will understand where behavior comes from and learn the first steps to managing it differently in yourself and the children in your care. 

Workshop led by Priscila Dávila, a certified instructor in Conscious Discipline. Ms. Dávila has 25+ years of experience in the education field as a teacher, discipline coach, trainer and administrator.

Caring for Children with Special Needs

Gain foundational knowledge of common behaviors of children with special needs as well as basic observational and assessment skills to plan for the individual needs of children. Through games, hands-on activities, reflection and exploring prior knowledge, this training will connect best practice and techniques to develop skills in understanding the basics of working with children with special needs.

Caring for Children w/ Special Needs Workshop Calendar & Descriptions

Serving People with Special Needs - Monday, September 13 - 6-8pm (2 hours)

  • Identify common behaviors of children with special needs by categorizing at least 4 behaviors successfully into sensory, physical, emotional, and cognitive needs.

Observing Children for Better Understanding - Tuesday, September 14 - 6-8pm (2 hours)

  • Through hands-on practice, participants will utilize observations and individual observation tools to appropriately document behaviors of children and identify their needs.

Creating an Environment for Children with Special Needs - Wednesday, September 15 - 6-9pm (3 hours)

  • Develop a tool box of several strategies to enhance their environment and better serve various special needs.

Understanding the Causes of Behaviors and Strategies to Support Them - Thursday, September 16 - 6-9pm (3 hours) 

  • Develop a tool box of several strategies based on children’s behaviors to better serve various special needs.

Anti-Racist Early Childhood Education

Children are aware of race and social attitudes around race at a young age. Often children begin to internalize these attitudes about themselves and their communities.

Anti-racism is a term used to promote more than simple acceptance of non-dominant culture practices. Anti-racism includes actively opposing oppressive practices, attitudes, and behaviors.

Anti-Racist Workshop Calendar & Descriptions

The Healing Relationship (2 day online class) Tuesday, September 21 and Thursday, September 23 @ 6:00 - 9:00pm

Relationships are the center of all children’s early learning and development, especially for children who have experienced trauma. Supporting healthy relationships with children and their families is the child care provider’s most important role. Child care providers can develop their ability to build not only healthy relationships, but truly healing relationships. Participants will explore essential foundations in relationship-building and practice three relationship-building tools that can help. 

Trauma and Vicarious Trauma (2 day online class) - Tuesday, September 28th and Thursday, September 30th @ 6:00 - 9:00pm

Providers will begin to understand the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) on developing children and how to recognize and identify the impacts of childhood trauma.

The Invention of Whiteness (2 day online class)  - Tuesday October 5th and Thursday October 7th @ 6:00 - 9:00 pm 

Children begin perceiving attitudes about their racial, cultural, and ethnic identities from the world around them at a very early age. These forces can leave enduring marks on their senses of self and self-esteem, impacting their development and ability to thrive. Early childhood educators can help build safe and affirming spaces for children to grow and learn in order to counteract the toxic effects of racism. Participants will gain a better understanding of structural racism, race, and whiteness, and learn how to shift their personal perspective on race in order to support children’s healthy development.

Understanding the Psychological Effects of Racism (2 day online class) - Tuesday October 12th and Thursday, October 14th  @ 6:00  - 9:00 pm

Learn about the psychological effects of racial trauma on developing children as well as strategies to counter negative impacts. 

Promoting Resilience (2 day online class) - Tuesday, October 19th and Thursday, October 21st @ 6:00  - 9:00 pm

Childcare providers face many stressful situations that can take an emotional toll on them throughout any given day. It is important that providers work on building personal resilience in themselves. This will be a vital factor in building resilience in the children they serve.

“How to Become a Licensed Family Home Childcare Provider” - Wednesday, November 10th @ 6:30-8PM

Have you thought about becoming a licensed childcare provider?

This workshop introduces the process of becoming a licensed Family Child Care Home (FCCH) provider. You’ll come away with information, resources and take home materials which can support your journey through the official state licensing process. By the end of this workshop, you’ll have a lot more information as you consider if you’d like to run your own home daycare business.
